Day 14

IV has been removed!

Up until now, Robin has been receiving supplementary nutrition (sugar / fat / electrolytes) via a “long line” IV. Now, at almost two weeks old, his stomach is now big enough to have 8.5mls of milk per hour, which is enough nutrition to keep gaining weight and growing without supplements.

When we arrived today, the nurse was just starting to remove his IV, so Nicki was able to comfort him as the tape and IV were removed. Robin was also given a bit of sucrose to distract him. Whilst it doesn’t hurt to gave the IV removed, the sticky tape coming off his delicate skin can be unpleasant (but not as bad as ripping off a bandaid, they are much more gentle!)

Peter got told off for reading Robins overnight nurses notes, (apparently we aren’t supposed to) but all ended well, with the nurse arranging for Robins doctor to speak to us both about his progress. Dr Headly called Peter to let us know that our son is a bit of an overachiever, and is doing extremely well for a premie of his gestation & adjusted age. Got to be happy with that!

Granny Ramone and Opa Roy came to visit, as well as Aunty Lyn, and Nicki has a nice long skin to skin cuddle.

One of the nurses who was at Robins birth was assigned to care for him in the afternoon. She decided to change all his bedding and find some real clothes for him, now that his IV had been removed. She went around to all the cupboards in NICU and SCBU to find a perfect little outfit size 000000) and some soft bedding. He was being very spoilt today, and loved all the attention (wonder where he gets that from?!) Nicki had the dubious task of trying to dress him, while Peter happily videoed and laughed at her attempts to keep Robins feet in the feet of the onesie. In spite of a lot of wriggling and squirming, Nicki was able to dress Robin, who then proceeded to lay very still. Of course.
