Day 24

The fridge is full.

Nicki visited after a day of quarantine, to be told that her shelf in the milk fridge is full. She’d just brought in about a litre of milk, which at current consumption is about 3 days worth…. so definitely ahead of the curve. Unfortunately there’s no milk bank to donate to, which is a shame since up to 30% of new mothers in NICU/SCBU have trouble with breastfeeding/expressing.

Robin’s feeds, air and so-on are being kept the same for a few days, to allow for some stability after a few weeks of rapid progress.

Nicki spoke to a physiotherapist named Ruth. Robin was fitted for a peanut pillow. Preemies spend longer on their sides than term babies, as it takes them longer to be able to move their heads and sit up etc. Because if this, their heads tend to get longer & alien like. The peanut pillow is used then they are on their backs, for short periods of time, to help form their skull into a normal rounded shape. The physio said that there are other thing we will work in with Robin as he gets a bit older.

When we used the peanut pillow for the first time, Robin out his hands up to it straight away to feel what it was.

After changing his nappy, Nicki wrapped him up in a swaddle for the first time. She then gave him his dummy, and he got very excited! His heart rate went up and he spent some time sucking on it, which is very good for developing the sucking skills required for breastfeeding!
