Day 41

Weight gain and introductions

Robin has a massive weight gain – 60gms! He is now up to 2.1kg, so growing quickly everyday. The increased milk is certainly helping, as is the daily cuddles, supplementary milk from breastfeeding and the EBM (expressed breastmilk) fortifier (added calories).

Nicki thinks that Robin had a bit of a jump in cognitive development, as he spend a good deal of time today making eye contact with her and giving little smiles. He was awake longer and was really interested in his immediate environment. When measuring his head, it has grown almost 2cm in circumference in just a week!

The ‘wonder weeks’ is a baby book that guides parents through the developmental jumps that babies make. Although the literature states that it is for term babies, and premies development is different, Robin seems to be hitting the mark with the first wonder week (week 5): “The world of changing sensations: As your baby’s metabolism develops, and has a growth spurt in head circumference, he’ll able to notice more of what’s happening in the world. After this week, he’ll look at things more frequently, respond to touch differently, start to give ‘social smiles’, respond to smell, and be more alert during awake periods.”

Grandma and Grandpa Lees came to visit and met Robin for the first time! He was asleep for most of it, but Nicki and Peter changed his nappy, gave him a wash, weighed and fed him whilst they were there. Granny Suzy also showed up and was able to meet G&G Lees, before we all went out to dinner.
