Day 36

Five weeks old

Robin is now five weeks old, and very hungry! He is easily digesting the 25mls of milk, and we have asked them to increase the amount he gets. When Nicki was holding him today, he got fidgety and was looking around for a breast only 75minutes after he was fed. When it was time to feed him, he had been sucking on a dummy for a good 20 minutes – all signs that he was hungry.

When doing a gavage feed, we suction out some undigested milk from his tummy to test for acidity. This is to check that the nasal gastric tube is correctly placed in his stomach. When we tried to do this at 7pm, there was nothing in his tummy to check. Instead, we had to feed him some milk, and then check that it could be removed from his tummy via suction. To feed him the milk, the nurse and Nicki put a few MPs of milk into a syringe, and attached an small extension tube to it. This was gently placed in a Robins month, and he was given his dummy to suck. As he sucked on his dummy, Nicki would administer a small amount of milk into his mouth. Robin loved it, he greedily swallowed every drop, and was very excited to taste milk.

We are hoping to try breastfeeding tomorrow!
