Day 35

More of the same

Milk feeds have been increased to 25mls every two hours, and Robin continues to gain weight. They are going to keep him on optiflow over the weekend, and potentially try him without it again early next week.

Granny Suzy came in with Nicki today, and read some Winnie the Pooh to Robin. Nicki then got Robin out for a long skin to skin cuddle (3 hours!). He was asleep for most of it, but got quite warm under a blanket and against Nicki. He really only need a light covering when being held close, or he gets too hot.

After the cuddle, Nicki changed his nappy, washed and weighed him, and gave him a gavage feed. He was quite awake and happy to see Peter when he arrived. Peter and Robin spent some nice quality time together while Nicki expressed (long overdue after such a long cuddle!).

Christmas decorations are up around the hospital as everyone start to prepare. It now feels like the count down is on – Christmas seems closer, and we are starting to think about our steps to get him home. A lot of parents (understandably) want to try to get their babies home for Christmas, as we do. As soon as he is off of optiflow, and weighs over 2kg, we will book into the parenting room – a “trial run” at the hospital, where you can test out having him at home, but with the support of the nurses if needed. We’ll have to book in early to ensure we don’t miss out on a place leading up to Christmas. There is only one parenting room, and it will under demand just before Christmas, so our plan is to book in early.
