Kyoto day 2

Kyoto day 2

Breakfast today was a bento box on the Shinkansen on our way to Himeji. Robin was very interested in the boxes of food, and got quite upset that he didn’t have one. Unfortunately, there was not much baby friendly food in the bentos that we could feed to him. Luckily, he was satisfied with sucking on a pickled green thing (maybe a cucumber? Maybe Japanese radish?) and some mushy pumpkin. He also wanted to drink out of our drinks, so he tried some peach ice tea straight from the bottle. He is very good at drinking slowly and waiting for the liquid to get into his mouth. We often forget that he is really aware of what we are doing, and we need to think about what he is going to eat when we eat. He’s no longer satisfied with just milk, even if it’s just to have a taste of different things.

Once we got to Himeji, we caught a taxi from the station to Himeji Castle. It is a massive 6 story white castle built around 1333 built on the top of a hill. It took about an hour climbing up stair to get to the top. The castle was really well designed, on each level the windows all seemed to have a breeze blowing in and it was quite cool inside, even though it was quite hot today.

Robin was once again the star of the show, and people loved him in his sunglasses and hat. The view from the top was spectacular, you can see out over the castle, the gardens and Kyoto. Robin liked it a lot. The top room is about 92m from sea level.

After the castle, we went to the royal gardens and walked around for an hour. There were many small gardens within the larger garden area. It was nice to be in the shade and see giant koi fish in the ponds.

We stopped for a late lunch at a little cafe on the way back to the train station and had traditional Japanese food. The ladies running the cafe were entranced by Robin and he was playing up to it with smiles and laughs.

He wasn’t so well behaved on the Shinkansen, but understandably, he was hot and tired (so were we!). We got back to the hotel and had a big drink and cooled down before heading out to Gion for dinner.
